Accelerating the replacement of lithium batteries, China Resources Micro deploys electric BMS

Due to (1) the rapid increase in the proportion of cordless power tools shipped, the proportion of cordless power tools in 2020 has reached 64%; (2) lithium batteries are accelerating the replacement of nickel-cadmium/nickel-metal hydride batteries; demand growth. Lithium batteries are batteries that use lithium metal or lithium alloy as the negative electrode material and use a non-aqueous electrolyte solution. Therefore, this type of battery is also called a lithium metal battery. Different from other batteries, lithium batteries have the characteristics of high charging density, long life and high unit cost. Depending on the structural design and electrode materials, lithium batteries can generate voltages ranging from 1.5 V (equivalent to zinc-carbon or alkaline batteries) to 3.7 V.


       On June 16th, a series of products of China Resources Micro-Integrated Circuit Business Group applied to power tools and other fields appeared at the 4th Power Tool Key Components Technology Seminar. The advantages and disadvantages of lithium batteries and the comparison of various data show that compared with nickel-cadmium/nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium batteries not only have no memory effect, but also have superior characteristics such as light weight, high specific capacity, long service life, and environmental protection. In 2020, the global penetration rate of lithium batteries in cordless power tools has reached 90%; taking into account the global cordless ratio, the penetration rate of lithium batteries in global power tools is 58%.


 


       At present, the penetration rate of lithium batteries for power tools in China is only 23%, and there is huge room for replacement. According to data surveys, China shipped 260 million power tools in 2019, accounting for more than half of global shipments, becoming the world’s main producer of power tools; while the penetration rate of domestic lithium battery products is only 23%. According to GGII forecasts, it is expected to be by 2023. The penetration rate of lithium batteries in China's domestic power tools will reach 55%, corresponding to the demand for 7.5GWh of lithium batteries. In 2019, among domestic lithium battery suppliers for power tools, Tianpeng, Haisida, and Yiwei have ranked in the top three, and since then, domestic manufacturers have risen.


       Looking at the problem from a development perspective, the long-term power tool lithium battery market is expected to reach 7.1 billion US dollars. According to data from GrandView Research, the global power tool market in 2019 was 32.3 billion U.S. dollars. The impact of the epidemic in 2020 is expected to be 30.7 billion U.S. dollars, and it will further increase to 40.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2027, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.2%. The demand mainly comes from the automobile, construction industry and home DIY. The cost of lithium batteries in power tools accounts for 20%-30%. Considering the 58% penetration rate of lithium batteries in the global power tool market, the long-term lithium battery market for power tools will reach US$4.7-7.1 billion. From the perspective of development trends, lithium batteries will accelerate the replacement of other batteries, and lithium batteries have become the first choice.


       Due to the growing demand for lithium batteries for cordless power tools, MOS will usher in an incremental market.
